ELA blog February 23

Izabella Curtis ELA Dr. Cobos 02/23/2018 Take the in-class writing we did last week on Wednesday/Thursday (the prompts that were sitting around the table). Expand and revise that writing to create one coherent, well-thought-out blog entry. The prompts I did was: The use of the red-orange color on page 210-211 The family picture on page 267 Ways immigrants can learn to be Americans   On pages 210 and 211 the orangey color changes to a lighter orange color. On those pages they talk about how the war ended, the loss of a child, and the stress of not having food. I think she chose to have an orange-brown color to show a different emotion. Not sadness by itself and not stress, I think she tried to show both feelings and a third feeling that is hard to label because it is something indescribable. The family picture is very interesting because she chose to make it the actual picture of them on the boat. I think it was a super smart move on her because it gi...

ELA BLOG

Izabella Curtis ELA Dr. Cobos February 20, 2018 Day one. Today my group is Kallan, Jack and myself. Originally we Kallan, Jack, Jadyn, Abby, Anna, and Sierra were going to be a group. I wanted to take pictures and go to all the gardens in the city and I wanted to represent the different environment the authors parents. But… change of plans. I am not going to lie this is … going to be a hard project. I would have switched groups but I think it might be doable! I think its annoying that Kallan is doing this JUST to wear her prom dress. Also i have a lot of doubts. But it’s ok we can do it. I’m not scared at all… I’m only very nervous.    February 21, 2018 Day 2 Today we haven't talked about the project at all. I think we should start changing the idea. February 22, 2018 Day 3 Today was the first 2 hour class. I came up with a few changes in our project. Instead of have 2 BIG boards i thought we should make one frame and then we would go to the gard...

ELA December

Izabella Curtis ELA Dr. Cobos December 21, 2017 Choose a real-life circumstance in which you can analyze and discuss the cause and effect. [My “real life” cause and effect situation is from the tv show F.R.I.E.N.D.S my topic is Ross and Rachel’s romantic relationship.] Let's start at the beginning, Ross has always been in love with Rachel SINCE HIGH SCHOOL! He was going to ask her to prom and he was going to love her BUT NO. Rachel always chose someone different! Then on the first episode Rachel lost connections with Monica and Ross. Ross was just divorced and Rachel was running away from her fiance and then they met again! Love was in the air for Ross and Rachel!! They finally started dating and then they broke a few times...Ross cheated on her because they were “on a  break” and then they broke up and then as he was marrying his second wife he said HER name at the altar! And then they got drunk and got married in Vegas. Then at the end of series Rachel is pregnant wit...

A Good Man is Hard to Find

Izabella Curtis ELA Dr. Cobos December 14th, 2017 A Good Man is Hard to Find Show how the plot develops in the story. Point to specific parts of the text to do this. [I thought it was an interesting approach for a story. This story is about a family outing to Florida and then, spoiler alert, everything goes wrong.] We start with the Grandma warning her beloved family not to go to Florida because a crazy murder has escaped and it wasn't safe. Everyone ignores her and continues to pack up there things. They get in the car and start the miserable drive to Florida. The grandmother sandwiched between her young grandchildren, her son driving and her daughter in law sitting in the front with her baby. They eat their lunch in the car and then stop at Red Sammy’s BBQ sandwich shop and talk to red sammy himself. After a long conversation with him warning the family to be safe the grandmother wants to visit her old house where she always felt safe. She convinces the children an...

Oral History Project

Izabella Curtis ELA/IHSS Dr Cobos and Dr. Lee 10/29/2017           The "process" of my groups Oral History Project went pretty smooth. We were (at the start) the only group of 4. So that meant an even distribution of work, It all went well Ilan chose the person, he emailed her, she said yes. So then our group start making questions we made about 25 then Dr. Cobos added a few more. Then we did the interview, I was the interviewer, Kaylee the note taker, Ilan did the audio, and Abby did video. After everything was done we started transcribing. Again 4 people 4 equal parts. Over all I think my group was pretty awesome.         Then we had the section B presentation. That went kind of chaotic..... our section was the last know and of course the last to finish. I feel like it wasn't an even distribution of work, I only feel that way because I was stuck doing half of a 20 minute analysis for my gro...

The End of Persepolis

In what ways did Marjane find it difficult to fit back into Iranian society? In what ways did this surprise you (or not surprise you)?        I chose this question because I thought it was very interesting to me. Ok, to start off clothing vise in Iranian culture was in page 246 when a man at the airport tells her to fix her veil. Also on page 250 when she is back at her home, this is when she almost forgets to put her veil on.        When she leaves her house for the first time when she's back in Iran on page 250 she sees these really depressing murals all around the city, and as she walks around she notices that the streets she played on as a kid were no longer there during the war, and the joy from the people she once loved was gone. She noticed that everything changed all together. (page 251)      Then I noticed when her whole family and friends came to see her she was overwh...

Weekly Blog

Izabella Curtis English Language Arts Dr. Cobos 09/27/2017 Why did Marjane's parents decide to send her to Europe? Do you think this was the right decision? Why or why not? I think Marjane’s parent made the right call. Majane was very smart and very rebellious, sooner or later she was going to get arrested for not wearing the “appropriate” clothing or she would get caught having tapes or other little things like that. Marjane’s school’s religion was not rubbing on her like they hoped and right when she got kicked out her school no other school would want her rebellious attitude and the fact that she slapped the principal no one would give her the education. Marjane has experience a lot of deaths in her young life at 14. She lost friends, family, her own sense of childhood. Overall I think her parent made the right call. It had to be a very hard decision but I think for sure she was better off leaving her home country. She became very independent and responsible, and th...
