The End of Persepolis
In what ways did Marjane find it difficult to fit back into Iranian society? In what ways did this surprise you (or not surprise you)?
I chose this question because I thought it was very interesting to me. Ok, to start off clothing vise in Iranian culture was in page 246 when a man at the airport tells her to fix her veil. Also on page 250 when she is back at her home, this is when she almost forgets to put her veil on.
When she leaves her house for the first time when she's back in Iran on page 250 she sees these really depressing murals all around the city, and as she walks around she notices that the streets she played on as a kid were no longer there during the war, and the joy from the people she once loved was gone. She noticed that everything changed all together. (page 251)
Then I noticed when her whole family and friends came to see her she was overwhelmed with not joy, more like confusion. After seeing her friends all she could think was "how could I have anything in common with any of these people," she never realized how obnoxious her friends and family were. She didn't get that her past was surrounded with these annoying people. (pages 258, 259)
She falls into this era of depression. She feels lost because if she tells her friends and family what happened in Australia and what she did, she feels like they wouldn't understand, and because of there culture she knows what the consequences would be. Then on page 270 she goes on a trip with her friends and tells then she had sex with more than one man and her friends called her a whore. She felt like nothing. She thought she was nothing.
Her whole experience didn't surprise me. After being in a country with no rules then going back to some of the strictest rules is a huge step down. During her time in Australia she grew more independent and she had to stand up for herself. But now that she is in Iran she could get arrested for talking back. So being a general rebellious person i think its safe to assume that she would have some trouble shifting back into her old life.
